Though I write, teaching is my day job, so I'll have to tell my college English students to check this one out to add to their list of (usually not very inventive) excuses!
Back when I was a college student, I never would have thought of "the cat chewed my homework" as a legitimate excuse, but after 20 years or so of being owned by cats, I know its a real possibility! Here's another--"my cat peed on it." My late cat took the liberty of peeing on any and all papers and books that happened to end up on the floor.
