I can't remember the boy's name, but I do remember the note, it said, "I like you even if you are a witch." I've thought of it many times over the years and wish that I had it today! Happy Valentine's Day to you all!
I'm sure there'll be lots of love poetry this Friday! Linda at
TeacherDance is rounding it all up for us. Here's wishing your day is full of love and CHOCOLATE!
And please visit
Laura Shovan's blog for the continuing Pantone Poetry Project! I can't wait to find out what next week's colors are!
Haha! What a line. Boys say the funniest things! I love your poem, and yes, it would have been nice to have the note. Happy Valentine's Day!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Iza! Happy Valentine's Day to you, too!
DeleteThat sounds like something one of the boys I teach would say! Happy Valentine's Day!
ReplyDeleteAnd you, too, Linda! Maybe some second-grader will give you a valentine today?
DeleteSo funny, and so sweet that you remember, Diane. You must have liked him a little bit! I like the way you presented your poem.
ReplyDeleteI guess I did!
DeleteAh, second grade boys! They do eventually grow up, kinda...
ReplyDeleteI think that may be debatable, Donna! ;-)
DeleteBoys...some of them do struggle to get their compliments "just so" - let's hope this fellow did!
ReplyDeleteAre you implying by "just so" that I may really be a witch? ;-)
DeleteYou've reminded me to look in a trunk I brought from my parents' house two years ago -- I think it may have some homemade cards from my elementary school friends! It's hard to strike a balance between saving things for sentimental value and not cluttering up the house!
ReplyDeleteThe balance as you get older seems to get easier for some. Sadly, in my case, it hasn't kicked in yet. I need start weeding. Soon!
DeleteSo funny! Itsn't it interesting the things that stick in our minds for so long afterward.
ReplyDeleteI also have memories from the school bus in kindergarten! And yet, I can't walk from one room to another and remember why!
DeleteThere are those things, aren't there, that stay with you for undoubtedly deep or silly reasons that can be hard to unpack--just like the trunks and boxes we drag out of our parents' garages and which don't contain what we hope we saved.
ReplyDeleteI love this little thought.
How true. When I got a cardboard box filled with my childhood collection of cats, I was so disappointed to find they weren't as beautiful as I had remembered. Most were downright ugly! A few had been broken and clued back together! And there were rhinestones!
DeleteHe undoubtedly had a thing for you. :) Teasing seems to be the sincerest form of flattery when it comes to boys. Have a chocolaty Valentine's Day!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely having some chocolate! You can count on it!
DeleteDiane, that is classic. So 2nd grade! Wouldn't it be fun to go back and visit those classroom Valentines?
ReplyDeleteOh yeah. Especially the ones that were signed!
DeleteAh, second grade boys--some things never change. And how wonderful to still have that memory. Happy Valentine's Day!
ReplyDeleteMy memories are spotty at best! Many are of things I deeply regret, but this memory is just right!
DeleteToo funny! At least now you can rest easy knowing that the memory has been safely deposited into the poem bank. (You do back up your computer, right?)
ReplyDeleteWell, I have a cloud solution that backs up everything on Sunday, but I've never actually gone out to the cloud to see if I can access it all! How dumb is that?
DeleteDiane, I confess, when I first read it through I thought maybe this boy with his unlovely valentine had turned into the real thing.
ReplyDeleteNo, but that's the beauty of poetry, you can read into it what you want!
DeleteWow, that boy had quite a way with words! Too funny! My 10 y/o daughter received a Valentine today from a boy in her class that read, "You are pretty. Want to hang out?" Her response was "He's so weird." LOL
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like your daughter's friend found his message in a bag of Sweethearts candy! Maybe he's going to end up a haiku poet!
DeleteWhat a memory you have!
ReplyDeleteAlmost totally useless when it comes to the important things like, "did I take my beta-blocker today?" but just great when it comes to remembering the exact location at which I learned to tie shoes. Yup, what a memory!
DeleteLove this. Only from a second grader.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jone! And thanks for the interview and posting my haiga on your blog!
DeleteMaybe he meant that you had bewitched his heart? I remembered the other day that in college someone told me I had inspired a science fiction story he'd written about a girl who sucks out men's souls or something like that. I wasn't really sure if a "thank you" was in order...
ReplyDeleteTabatha, my gut instinct is "no." ;-)
