Poetry Friday--I'm Back!

I wasn't going to post today, but Linda Baie's post kind of shamed me into it. Linda and I, Janet Fagal, Pamela Ross, Charles Waters, and about a dozen others, attended the 2017 Highlights "The Craft and Heart of Writing Poetry for Children," with Georgia Heard and Rebecca Kai Dotlich. Suffice it to say, it was wonderful and inspiring. However, it will take a bit of time to incorporate some of what I learned. In my case, it may take me off onto avenues I've not taken before--think rhyme, poetic devices, etc. Here's a senryu, featuring a leaf I took a picture of to demonstrate a species-identifying app on my phone! Not the prettiest leaf, but against the gray-brown of the woodland path it does stand out, and, it provided me with a apt metaphor!

    1. Thanks, Jama. I didn't take many notes--I hope Linda did! The most important thing I learned is to write the "unexpected."

  3. I took a few notes. If there's anything to share, Diane I will let you know. Yes.... The surprise in the poem. I loved learning, working, and refining with you, Linda, Charles, Pamela and went. A perfect combination of challenge and support. Rebecca Kai Dotlich and Georgia Heard are wonderful to learn from. Your Haiku is grand!

    1. I'd like to think I that I'd refer to notes, but I rarely do, and that's why I take so few. Thanks for your offer to share, Janet! It was fun to watch the group bond.

  4. Wonderful....a Highlights workshop is fuel for many, many, many poems. Fortunately, once the coal is lit it burns a long time. I'm so looking forward to hearing more and seeing your work.

  5. I posted a "fall leaves in PA" photo on FB (from the day trip to Falling Water). Like you, I shot it for ID purposes (a reminder of all the species of trees we saw there), but I set up my shot so that colorful examples from each tree were all together! (Maybe like crafting a poem so that all the colors shine in a new way?)

    1. It is a hard time of year for teachers to get away, and, it's a huge outlay of cash, especially since you'd be flying. But one thing I will say--you are worth it!

  9. How wonderful that you were able to celebrate poetry with some of our writing friends, Diane. You found the color popping through throughout the week, literally and figuratively, I am sure.
