Poetry Friday--Goodbye October

In a flash, October has come and gone. Before we move on into November, I wanted to share the postcards I sent to four people in Amy Souza's October Spark postcard challenge. (To learn more about Spark, click here.)

We were free to create an art postcard of our choosing. No topics were assigned, but, I like to work around a theme. I think I'd have to say that the results are all about ORANGE, although they began as an exploration of the topic of "pumpkins."

the field mouse's treat
a day late

I hope I haven't hurt anyone's eyes or sensibilities with all the orange! I can guarantee I will never use orange in quantities such as this ever again!

Head over to Teacher Dance where Linda is hosting the Round-Up this week. Linda had posted a photo on Facebook last week of a squirrel nibbling on a jack-o-lantern. Old pumpkins can provide a treat for many little creatures.

  1. Each one is a gem, Diane. The pumpkins left out are a treat for little creatures. I've loved seeing the scamper of the squirrels to get to them. As for the little field mice, I've had them visit this week "inside" & that has not been so pleasant! If I get to choose a favorite, it's the "orange polka dots" but I also love the idea of that 'artificial heart' too. Your recipients must have been joyful when receiving! Have a great day tomorrow!

    1. Thanks, Linda. I wasn't sure if the "artificial heart" was too much of a stretch.

  2. These are great from start to finish, Diane! We put a pumpkin in a tree, and the squirrels have been LOVING that. It will be nothing but a stalk before long.

  3. I love all of these, Diane - but the orange polka dotted cloth got me most...exactly what some field in upstate New York looked like.

    1. I drove to a conference very early in the morning, one time, and with the mist, and the pumpkins in the spent field, it was a memorable sight.

  4. These are all delightful, Diane. Love the polka dot tablecloth and the compost heap full of grins especially. Yes, the color orange has taken on new meaning recently . . .

  5. Really fun, Diane. I happen to love orange, so I say, more of it. I love the fall cornfield in the first photo and the poem.

    1. Thanks, Janice! You should sign up for a Spark challenge next time there is one. (I think there's one coming up in December.) You'll be paired with someone who'll email you an artwork. You will write a poem inspired by the work. You'll send the artist one of your poems and he/she will create a piece of art. It's fun!

  6. What a treasure to be on the receiving end of these. I love the idea of the orange theme. I sent postcards as well but alas, you weren't on my list.

    1. The last one reminds me of the book: Mousekin's Golden House.

    2. And I would have loved to receive one of yours, Jone!

The last one was written as a tribute to Mousekin's Golden House. Kurious Kitty also mentioned the book this week. http://kuriouskitty.blogspot.com/2017/11/mousekins-golden-house.html

  7. Of course, I love these creations, Diane. You were right on time with November 1st and both of those image poems are both wonderful.

    1. Thanks, Carol. Isn't it amazing how autumn is my least favorite season, yet I write about it so often!

    1. Can you wear orange? I think one of the reasons I dislike it is because if I wear orange, it looks horrible with my coloring.

  9. Maybe we'll put our pumpkins out in the garden for the critters this year!

I was going to try to pick a favorite, but I love them all!

Congrats on being featured on the Haiku Foundation site. You are truly a master of the form!!

  10. There's so much to enjoy here! I especially love your tanka with those polka-dotted pumpkin fields and the grinning compost pile. Delightful!

  11. These are such fun poems--indeed an orange celebration! My compost pile could use a few grins, but they are still on the front porch!

  12. That field mouse is so adorable. I love this outpouring of orange. It embodies autumn.

  13. These are all fun but as a collection they feel like a year-round treat in the making. Other months, other colors? The orange polka dot made me think of fabric, for some reason! (Quilting on the brain, perhaps!)

  14. I feel the emotional tug of each of these (especially living here in NH), but I love the conceit of an "artificial heart" the most!

  15. I can never get enough orange or pumpkins Diane. I like the "compost heap now with grins!" maybe because I compost my pumpkins and gourds too, and very often a new plant grows in the spring. Thanks for the fun post!
