Poetry Friday--An Illustrated Cherita

Here's a cherita that I enjoyed illustrating. A brief cherita definition: a three-stanza poem that tells a story. The first stanza has one line that sets the scene, the second stanza has two lines, the third has three lines.

Text:

"Dear..."

only stars
truly bridge distances

our words are riprap:
nothing as strong as
a heaven's foundation

I'm not exactly sure what the story is here, I'll leave it up to you, the reader, to fill in the details!

I like the word "riprap." It's a term that relates to bridges in that it is a not-necessarily stable foundation of stones. If you take the "rap" part, rap also relates to words.

Dictionary.com definition of riprap:

noun

1. a quantity of broken stone for foundations, revetments of embankments, etc.
2. a foundation or wall of stones thrown together irregularly.

Dictionary.com definition of rap:

noun

15. Slang.

        a. a talk, conversation, or discussion; chat.
        b. talk designed to impress, convince, etc.; spiel:
            a high-pressure sales rap.

  1. It fits our sorrowful day very well, Diane. At least, that's how I see it. "Riprap" is a terrific word.

    1. I'm not sure what my original intent in writing it was, but I'm glad you found it relevant today.

This last "episode" on the part of he-who-shall-not-be-named has insulted us all. "Sticks and stones" can be less hurtful than words spoken in hate.

  2. A lot of possibility to ponder here... I agree with Linda about the terric-ness of "riprap"! I'll also claim a positive take, that the stars will still do their celestial thing and offer us the gift of perspective, giving us glimpses beyond the daily stresses and shortcomings on our little planet. Love the maps!

  3. I love this ethereal poem about the stars and how we can gain so much from them–it reminds me of how important nature is and that we need to remember her always! Maybe you know who should try gazing up at the stars every once in while … Lovely imagery too, thanks Diane!
